Therapy: what to expect and how it works

Everyone has heard of therapy before, but not everyone knows what therapy entails. In reality, there are some misconceptions and questions surrounding therapy. In fact, sometimes, people feel a bit nervous about scheduling their first therapy session because they don't know what to expect. However, we can assure you that there's really nothing to worry about. To prove this, we've broken down the therapy process so there's no surprises and you'll know exactly what to expect.


Therapy starts with providing therapists with some background information. Usually, a client will discuss what has brought them in, as well as, any struggles they are currently facing in their daily life. Don’t be alarmed if your therapist is taking notes — this is something that some therapists will do to track progress and document situations.


Next, a treatment plan is established. This usually occurs during the first three sessions, as the therapist gets to know the client better. There are several treatment methods that might be used. This is completely dependent on each individual’s unique needs. Some techniques might include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy or Eclectic Therapy. There are various methods, and your therapist will know which technique is best for your overall situation. 


Homework is involved. Throughout the process, your therapist will most likely give you some tasks to complete outside of session. However, don't let this scare you. This usually entails journaling or completing a worksheet. Your therapist might even simply ask you to take some time to ponder your thoughts and bring those back to session. 


The length of the process varies. The therapy timeframe boils down to each individual situation. A client's motivation to change and progress toward treatment goals is a big factor. Upon completing their treatment plan goals, individuals can graduate from therapy if their daily functioning is no longer impaired.
